Anatomy of a Haircut
Jimmy Page Edition
okay, so, this’ll only go from the Yardbirds era ‘til ‘79. Simply because I couldn’t be fucked drawing his entire follicle-related history.
Yardbirds (‘65 - ‘68) - Right, I had to start from the very beginning… well, not the very, very beginning, i.e. 1959 with his skiffleboardin’ quiff, hoho. So, this is first hairstyle we really remember. Like Jonesy, he opted for the initial side-fringey sweepy look, which suited him really well, I think. It does show up a lot in the following decade, so he must’ve thought it suited him, too.
1969 - If you exclude ‘68, where the haircut was pretty much the same anyway, this is the real start of Led Zeppelin, haircut-wise. Longer and wavier, more or less just an extension on the Yardbird style. Most likely fawned over for an hour in front of a mirror to get it looking just right; like he’s just had sex.
1970 - Christ, what happened here? Does anyone know? It just… expanded. I didn’t represent it very accurately here, but it’s not like we don’t know what it looks like. I’m sure we all had the moments watch Royal Albert Hall during White Summer watching him flick the huge mane up and down, side to side as he played. Probably the longest his hair ever was.
1971 - The beard. Good god, the beard. Of late, I’ve found myself really loving the beard. It first showed up in ‘70 with a shorter haircut and I suppose it just stuck for a few months. Not his most attractive look but it certainly works.
1972 - Out with the beard, in with… this. I’m not sure what to think of it. It just looks like a misshapen poof-ball, which ultimately was the beginning of the 1973 MSG haircut.
1973 - I do like this one, quite a lot. There was really nothing overtly fiddly about it and it just looked good on him. I think it went really well when he started to wear his suits, in this case, the spacey themed job with the embroidered Saturn on his bottom. He probably could’ve kept this haircut for the rest of the Zeppelin career and no-one would’ve complained.
1974 - Basically the grown-out version of ‘73. The sidefringe makes it’s most distinguishable return, however the picture I referenced was a flipped picture so that would explain the parting being on the wrong side. I’m indifferent towards this style, to be frank, but it did look good.
1975 - Ah, my favourite I think. When it got long(ish) again, and the top of his hair just completely… grew. Probably due to more preening, which, as I’ve heard from Miss Pamela, he seemed to do a lot of.
1976 - No real difference from the haircut above. He obviously found one he liked.
1977 - Okay, those glasses completed that look so I couldn’t not add them in. And hell, they look sexy. But of course he was having a rough time around this year. They all were. Seeing him look so strung out and unhealthily thin will always make it a little hard to think about his hair.
1979 - We’re skipping 1978 because well… does anyone really mind? I didn’t think so. We arrive now, finally, at the Knebworth haircut. This might just be me but when I first watched Knebworth, Jimmy really didn’t look like Jimmy to me. It was a little confronting. One of the reasons I think was the hair. It was just so short. Like, Yardbirds short! Just styled with considerably less care.
